We have been excited for the seasonal return of free train rides in Houston! Read on for why they are so much fun for all ages!

The Houston Area Live Steamers is a super cool, all-volunteer organization that maintains and drives large scale model railroad trains. We have been excited to head to Zube Park for HALS’ first Free Public Ride day of 2024, and it was a fun time for all.
HALS has a variety of trains that run on the model railroad tracks – I think they had 4 or 5 running at a time this weekend! We were lucky enough to ride a real steam engine, which was fun. Everyone is invited on the Public Ride Day, you just show up at Zube Park and get in line! HALS has pretty clear signage at Zube Park showing where to enter and where to park – but further details are on their website too. Parking is free and there was plenty available this weekend.
Each of the train rides are about 12-15 minutes long. Since they have multiple trains, the lines move decently quickly. The station has a covered roof, which will be nice for hot or sunny days to come!
Since these rides are free, I’d consider making a purchase at their gift and snack tables or making a donation to support the group. We picked up some train books! All ages can ride, I even saw babies in carriers riding with parents.
HALS offers free ride days 1-2 times a month from now until November. Check the website here for the full list of dates (and always check their website and socials before heading out, and inclement weather can force them to stop operations). Zube Park is located at 17802 Roberts Road, Hockley. Take the last entrance into the Park, where you will see a HALS sign.
Have you been to ride these free mini trains?
