The coolest STEM day out in Galveston Island may just be the Ocean Star Museum & Education Center! It is a retired offshore drilling rig that operated into the 80s, and now is a super interesting museum. Read on to find out more!

The setting is so awesome – walking out over the water to the rig – and the rig even has a helicopter on top! Inside, you learn so much about offshore work and technology – from geology to the equipment on a rig to all the elements of drilling and production. If you have a kid interested in how things work, this is such a cool day!

When you first enter, there is a scavenger hunt and activity book for kids that you can use as you go through the Museum. In addition, there is also a short video to start and you learn a lot about the rig and what you are going to see. I would try to pick a nice day for this museum, as you also get to tour the outside portions of the rig and it’s nicer to do on a sunny day! You will be able to see all the real equipment as well. A really one of kind experience!

The museum is operated by the Energy Education Museum, and very affordable – adults are $10 and kids under 6 are free.
